Vasquez, Ledbetter Named Two Of NWL's Top Prospects

Pitchers selected and honored by MLB managers and scouts
October 2, 2013

SPOKANE, Wash., - Kelvin Vasquez and David Ledbetter have been named to Baseball America's Top 20 Northwest League prospect list, coming in at No. 6 and No. 11, respectively.

Each season Baseball America consults with management and scouts from each professional ball club to determine the top prospects in each minor league. In order for both Vasquez and Ledbetter to qualify, each needed to average 1/3 innings pitched each game.

Vasquez, a 2011 free agent signing out of the Dominican Republic, dominated the Northwest League with his league-leading 2.27 ERA. Vasquez also led the league in opponent average (.199) and strikeout rate (10.4 per nine innings) and ranked second in total strikeouts (72).

"Vasquez is a tall, lanky, young kid," Spokane manager Tim Hulett told Baseball America. "He has a live fastball (90-94 mph) and a good slider. But to me, what really separated him this year - whether he threw it for strikes or not - was his changeup; (it) really helped him put guys away."

Ledbetter, whom the Texas Rangers spent a 2013 third-round draft pick on, also enjoyed early success in his career. The Cedarville University product posted a 2.93 ERA and had 51 punch outs.
