Vivili's Walk-Off HR Sends Indians to Win

Indians first baseman hammers a moonshot over the left field fence
August 26, 2014

Spokane, WA - Fernando Vivili hammered a three-run, walk-off home run over the left field fence to give the Spokane Indians a 4-3 victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes on Monday night in front of 4,418 fans at Avista Stadium. It was Health & Wellness Fair Night presented by Premera Blue Cross, HOT 96.9 and North Idaho Wellness.

Vivili was facing a full count with two on and two out as the Indians trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth. Volcanoes' pitcher Eury Sanchez gave him a fastball right down the middle of the plate and the rest was left in the parking lot behind the left field fence. Vivili finished 1 for 4 with the three RBI.

Spokane's Nick Gardewine, who was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, tossed five masterful innings allowing just one hit and striking out six. A first-inning walk and error allowed Salem-Keizer to score one run, however. Gardewine lowered his ERA to 4.55 and has only given up two runs in his past 24 innings pitched.

With the game tied 1-1 in the eighth, Salem-Keizer took the lead after Luis Pollorena walked in a run. Spokane Manager Tim Hulett disagreed with the call and was soon ejected. The Volcanoes would score another run in the inning to hold a 3-1 lead.

Seth Spivey hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Eduard Pinto. Pinto finished 2 for 4 with one double while raising his average to a league-high .333.

The Indians will play Game 2 of the five-game series against Salem-Keizer at Avista Stadium tomorrow, Tuesday, September 26th. It will be Premier Auto Show Night presented by Ed's Premier Auto Body, 93.7 The Mountain and SportsRadio 1510 KGA.
