Cardinals come back in 9th for 6-5 win

June 27, 2013

Corpus Christi, TX - The Springfield Cardinals struck for five runs in the top of the ninth inning, coming from behind for the 6-5 win against the Corpus Christi Hooks before 5,999 fans at Whataburger Field on Thursday night. C Cody Stanley dealt the final blow of the comeback - a pinch-hit, three-run homer with two down in the ninth.

The Hooks (4-4, 46-32) got off to a quick start, striking for the game's first run in the bottom of the first against LHP Jonathan Cornelius. After a two-base fielding miscue enabled DH Erik Castro to get all the way to second base with two away, 3B Jonathan Meyer cracked the scoreless tie with an RBI double, lifting the Hooks ahead, 1-0.

Corpus Christi doubled the narrow lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth. With two on and no outs, 1B Zach Johnson lined an RBI single to left field, scoring Meyer from second base for the 2-0 advantage.

The Cardinals (5-3, 38-38) very patiently sliced the deficit in half against LHP Kyle Hallock in the top of the sixth inning. Three walks worked by 3B Vance Albitz, CF James Ramsey and SS Jake Lemmerman around a ground out loaded the bases with only one away. Facing RHP Andrew Robinson, 3B Ruben Gotay worked the frame's fourth free pass, forcing in Albitz from third to get the Cardinals on the board and within only one run, 2-1.

However, the Hooks promptly stretched the lead back out in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson doubled to start the stanza, before a two-run blast by LF Michael Burgess swung Corpus Christi into the 4-1 advantage.

The Hooks kept the three-run lead intact until the Cardinals rallied in the top of the ninth. Gotay led off the inning with a base hit against LHP Patrick Urckfitz (L, 3-3), before LF Chris Swauger bounced into a fielder's choice. With Swauger at first and one down, 1B Xavier Scruggs and RF Stephen Piscotty loaded the bases with consecutive singles, with Piscotty replaced at first base by pinch runner RF Adam Melker. 2B Luis Mateo then placed an RBI single to shallow right field, scoring Swauger and advancing everyone ninety feet. Albitz followed with a sharp single to center, bringing in Scruggs. Melker tried to score from second on the play, but CF Drew Muren nabbed him at home plate with a perfect throw from center field, keeping the Hooks ahead, 4-3. With two on and two down, RHP Carlos Quevedo entered the game to try to slam the door. However, pinch hitter C Cody Stanley belted a two-strike pitch over the left-field wall, lifting the Cardinals in front with a three-run home run, 6-4.

After two scoreless innings of work by RHP Kevin Thomas (W, 4-3), RHP Heath Wyatt took over on the mound to start the bottom of the ninth. After singles by 2B Enrique Hernandez and C Max Stassi, Wyatt gave way to LHP Lee Stoppelman (S, 1). Hernandez eventually came in on an RBI ground out by RF Preston Tucker, but Stoppelman worked out of the jam with no further damage being done, closing the 6-5 comeback win for the Cardinals.
