Cardinals drill Tulsa, 12-1

May 5, 2013

Springfield, MO - RHP Scott McGregor no-hit the Tulsa Drillers through his six innings of work, helping lead the Springfield Cardinals to the 12-1 win before 3,501 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday night. St. Louis 1B Matt Adams went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and will make his final rehab start in Springfield this Monday at 7:09pm.

The Cardinals (15-13) cracked the scoreless tie with four runs against RHP Chad Bettis (L, 2-2) in the bottom of the third frame. SS Jake Lemmerman started the inning by reaching on an error, and then raced around to third on a double by LF Mike O'Neill one out later. CF Tommy Pham attacked the first pitch of his plate appearance and drove a two-run single to left-center, scoring Lemmerman and O'Neill. After a single by 3B Ruben Gotay, Adams rocketed a two-run double off the right-center field wall, doubling the Cardinals lead to 4-0.

Springfield stretched the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lemmerman led off with a single, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and taking third on a ground out. Pham then worked a walk, before attempting a stolen base on a pitch to Gotay. Tulsa C Dustin Garneau faked a throw to second and dealt one to third, but misfired the ball to left field, enabling Lemmerman to come home for the 5-0 lead.

The Cardinals added two more in the fifth on a two-run single by C Audry Perez, before a two-run pinch-hit double by INF Vance Albitz in the seventh stretched it to 9-0. Springfield tallied three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, featuring a two-run double by 2B Starlin Rodriguez and an RBI base hit by 1B Xavier Scruggs, making it 12-0.

An RBI double by Drillers 2B Angelys Nina in the top of the ninth got Tulsa (14-15) on the board, but that was as close as they would come with the Cardinals prevailing, 12-1.
