Cardinals top Tulsa, 5-3, in 8 innings

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals topped the Tulsa Drillers, 5-3, in a rain-shortened, eight-inning game before 2,573 fans at Hammons Field on Monday night. The start of the game was also delayed by 50 minutes.

With rehabbing St. Louis Cardinals LHP Tyler Lyons on the mound to start the game, the Drillers (35-27) moved in front in the top of the first with an early run. With a runner at second base and two down, 1B Harold Riggins knocked an RBI single through the left side of the infield for the 1-0 lead.

Lyons got out of the opening frame with a strikeout, before the Cardinals (29-34) swung in front in the bottom of the first against RHP Richard Castillo (L, 2-4). After SS Greg Miclat worked a leadoff walk, 2B Jacob Wilson belted a two-run home run to left-center, lifting Springfield into the 2-1 lead.

Lyons kept the Cardinals lead intact through his final frame, striking out a pair in the 1-2-3 top of the second. However, Tulsa tied it in the top of the third against All-Star LHP Kyle Hald (W, 6-1). 2B Taylor Featherston started the stanza with a double, followed by a walk from SS Cristhian Adames. After a wild pitch moved both runners up and a fly out, Riggins struck again with an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Featherston and even the score, 2-2.

Hald settled in on the mound keeping the tie intact with a scoreless fourth and fifth, but the Drillers broke through again in the top of the sixth. RF Jared Simon led off with a single, moving to second base on a groundout to third from CF Delta Cleary, Jr. Hald struck out Castillo, but Featherston lined an RBI single to right field, bringing in Simon for the 3-2 advantage.

The Cardinals didn't stay down for long, tying the game in the bottom of the sixth. Miclat again started the rally with a free pass, before racing all the way to third on a Wilson single. After a pop out, Wilson stole second base to put both runners in scoring position for All-Star 1B Jonathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez plated Miclat with an RBI grounder to first base, bringing the Cardinals back even at 3-3.

Springfield struck again to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With one down, Castillo plunked 3B Patrick Wisdom to put a man on. CF Nick Martini singled Wisdom to third base, before pinch-hitting 1B Curt Smith skied an RBI sacrifice fly to the wall in left field, scoring Wisdom for the 4-3 lead.

The Cardinals added one insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning against RHP Brandon Erbe. All-Star C Cody Stanley worked a one-out walk and the quickly stole his way to second base. During Rodriguez's at-bat, Erbe unleashed a wild pitch that advanced Stanley to third. Erbe had another one get away from him during the at-bat of LF Chris Swauger, enabling Stanley to charge home for the 5-3 lead.

LHP Lee Stoppelman, who tossed a scoreless eighth, struck out Featherston to start the top of the ninth, but then the rain started pouring down and the umpires sent the game into its second delay. After a 30-minute delay, the umpires called the game and the Cardinals took the 5-3 win in eight frames.
