Cards claim 5th straight win, 6-1, against Travs

April 19, 2014

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals won their fifth straight game, 6-1, against the Arkansas Travelers before 4,693 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday evening. LHP Jonathan Cornelius dealt seven frames in the victory, which extends the Cardinals lead for 1st in the early North Division Standings.

The Cardinals (8-7) jumped in front right away, striking for two runs in the bottom of the first against RHP Yeiper Castillo (L, 1-1). LF Mike O'Neill started the frame with a free pass, before RF James Ramsey launched a two-run home run to right-center field, propelling the Cardinals to the 2-0 lead.

Cornelius (W, 1-2) kept the Travelers (6-9) off the board until the top of the fourth inning. With two away, LF Zach Borenstein smacked a solo home run to left field, cutting the Arkansas deficit to 2-1.

However, Springfield responded right away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. CF Rafael Ortega led off with a single, before racing to third on a double from SS Luis Mateo. Ortega then darted home on an RBI groundout from 2B Greg Miclat that also moved Mateo to third. C Travis Tartamella plated Mateo with an RBI single pushed through the drawn-in infield, and then raced all the way in from first base on an RBI triple from O'Neill. After Ramsey walked, DH Aledmys Diaz capped the rally with an RBI fielder's choice, scoring O'Neill for the 6-1 lead.

Cornelius kept the five-run advantage intact through the remainder of his seven innings, logging six strikeouts. LHP Danny Miranda then took over and dealt two perfect frames, closing the 6-1 win for the Cardinals.
