Corpus Christi, TX - Five Springfield Cardinals pitchers combined to one-hit the Corpus Christi Hooks for the 2-0 shutout victory before 5,394 fans at Whataburger Field on Friday night. It marks the third one-hitter in Cardinals history and the first since July 12, 2010 vs. Midland.
The Hooks (1-1) led off the bottom of the first inning with a base hit from LF Austin Wates, but would not register another knock all night. RHP Scott McGregor (W, 1-0) shut down the Hooks through the first 5.2 scoreless innings, before LHP Justin Wright registered the final out in the sixth. RHP Deryk Hooker and RHP Michael Blazek continued the hitless relief with an inning apiece, and then RHP Keith Butler (S, 1) struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. The five combined to strike out 13 Hooks in the one-hit performance.
The Cardinals (1-1) jumped in front in the top of the second frame against RHP Nick Tropeano (L, 0-1) when DH Chris Swauger drilled a solo home run over the left-field wall. Five innings later, Springfield doubled the lead in the top of the seventh. With 1B Xavier Scruggs at third base and two down, CF Tommy Pham punched an RBI single to shallow left, making it 2-0.
The two runs were all the Cards needed behind the dominant pitching performance, and Springfield prevailed, 2-0.
