Cornelius and Cardinals shut out Naturals, 1-0

Springfield, MO - LHP Jonathan Cornelius tossed seven scoreless innings to pace the Springfield Cardinals to the 1-0 shutout win against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals before 3,171 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night. It is the sixth shutout win for Springfield this season.

Cornelius (W, 6-5) and Naturals RHP JC Sulbaran (L, 3-5) kept the opposing lineups' bats at bay, alternating scoreless frames before Springfield (31-34) broke through in the bottom of the fifth. C Cody Stanley led off with a screaming triple into the right field corner, setting the table for DH Curt Smith. Smith broke his bat on a fly ball, but still powered it to shallow center field for an RBI single, bringing in Stanley to lift the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.

Cornelius continued to dominate the Naturals (23-42), blanking them through his seven innings. The lefty finished with four strikeouts and only five hits allowed, not allowing a single Natural to get past first base against him.

LHP Lee Stoppelman picked up right where Cornelius left off, logging a scoreless eighth inning with only a base hit and a strikeout. RHP Joey Donofrio (S, 5) then struck out the side around a double in the top of the ninth, nailing down the 1-0 shutout win for Springfield.
