Cornelius and Cardinals two-hit Tulsa, 4-0

May 15, 2014

Tulsa, OK - LHP Jonathan Cornelius tossed 6.1 two-hit, scoreless innings to lead the Springfield Cardinals to the 4-0 shutout win against the Tulsa Drillers before 5,499 fans at ONEOK Field on Thursday night.

The Cardinals (18-22) jumped in front right away against RHP Dan Winkler (L, 5-2), cracking the scoreless tie in the top of the first inning. With two down and the bases clear, CF James Ramsey launched his league-best 10th home run to right field, swinging Springfield into the early 1-0 lead.

Springfield struck with another long-ball in the top of the fifth frame. After Winkler retired the first two in order, RF Rafael Ortega belted a solo bomb to right field, making it 2-0.

The Cardinals moved further in front against Winkler in the sixth inning. With one down and nobody on, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez hammered a solo shot to left field, stretching it to a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Cornelius (W, 3-4) dominated the Drillers (21-19) bats through his 6.1 innings. The Cardinals starter tossed his first four frames in no-hit fashion, finishing with only two hits and two walks allowed while striking out six.

After RHP Joey Donofrio started his outing with the final two outs in the scoreless bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals added their fourth run in the top of the eighth. 2B Jacob Wilson led off with a single, before moving to second base on a groundout from Ramsey. After a passed ball moved Wilson to third, he came home later in the inning on a fielding error from SS Cristhian Adames, making it 4-0.

Donofrio dealt a hitless and scoreless eighth, before LHP Lee Stoppelman slammed the door with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, closing the dominant 4-0 win for the Cardinals.
