Drillers pick up Wednesday afternoon win

May 14, 2014

Tulsa, OK - The Tulsa Drillers swung their way to the 8-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,908 fans at ONEOK Field on Wednesday afternoon.

After Springfield RHP Sam Gaviglio (L, 1-6) and Tulsa RHP Eddie Butler (W, 2-4) exchanged scoreless halves of the first inning, the Drillers (21-18) got on the board in the bottom of the second. Leading off the inning, C Tom Murphy drove a solo home run over the right field fence for the early 1-0 advantage.

Tulsa then stretched the lead with two tallies in the bottom of the third. With runners at first and second and two down, SS Cristhian Adames sliced an RBI single to bring in CF Tyler Massey and move 3B Joey Wong to third. Wong then raced home when a wild pitch escaped past C Cody Stanley, increasing the Drillers lead to 3-0.

The Drillers opened the gap further with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. After the first two batters reached on a walk and a single, 1B Harold Riggins emptied the bases with a three-run homer to right field, doubling the lead to six runs. Later in the inning with Butler on at second base and two down, Massey drove an inside-the-park home run to left-center field, making it an 8-0 lead.

Butler kept the Cardinals (17-22) bats at bay through his seven scoreless innings for Tulsa, followed by a scoreless relief frame from RHP Ryan Arrowood in the eighth. Springfield, though, got on the board against Arrowood in the ninth. CF Rafael Ortega worked a walk to start the inning, before racing all the way home on an RBI double by SS Matt Williams. Arrowood, however, worked out of the rest of the inning with no further damage, closing the 8-1 win for the Drillers.
