Drillers swing past Cardinals in series opener

Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers claimed the series opener with an 8-3 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,807 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday evening.

The Drillers (14-15) struck early with one run in the top of the first against RHP Sam Gaviglio. 2B Taylor Featherston led off with a base hit, before taking second on a sacrifice bunt. SS Cristhian Adames then cracked the scoreless tie with an RBI single, plating Featherston for the 1-0 lead.

Tulsa stretched the advantage in the top of the fourth. 1B Ryan Casteel started the frame with a double, quickly moving to third base on a groundout. 3B Jayson Langfels then skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Casteel to make it 2-0.

The Cardinals (14-15) came racing back against RHP Jonathan Gray in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one away, RF Rafael Ortega sparked the charge with a base hit. C Cody Stanley followed with a fielder's choice that led to a fielding error, enabling both Ortega and Stanley to be safe on the play. CF James Ramsey got the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single to center field, before a game-tying RBI double from 1B Curt Smith. LF David Popkins then propelled the Cardinals in front with an RBI single to right field, bringing in Ramsey for the 3-2 advantage.

Tulsa, though, came back with two home runs powering a five-run rally in the top of the eighth inning. With one on and two down, C Dustin Garneau tied the game with an RBI double, before he raced in from second on an RBI single from Langfels. Consecutive home runs then capped the rally with a two-run shot from LF Tyler Massey and a solo homer by RF Jared Simon, making it 7-3.

Featherston followed suit to start the top of the ninth inning, driving a solo home run that accounted for the 8-3 final score in the win for the Drillers.

Jaime Garcia and Green Caps highlight Sunday's game

In addition to the great lineup of promotions, this weekend's series will feature two rehabbing St. Louis Cardinals in LHP Jaime Garcia and RHP Jason Motte. Garcia is scheduled to start Sunday's 2:10pm game against the Tulsa Drillers and Motte is also expected to join the team.

Sunday's 2:10pm game features the Empire Bank Green Cap Giveaway for 2,500 fans. Sunday is also a Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday with free ice cream for kids before the game, and then all kids can run the bases just like the Cardinals after the game with The Track Family Fun Parks Kids Race the Bases. Sunday also features the Cardinals Bat Auction to benefit Cherish Kids. Gates open at 1:10pm.

The Cardinals and Drillers will then square off in consecutive morning games on Monday and Tuesday with both games starting at 11:10am. Gates open both days at 10:10am.
