Hald and Cardinals shut out Travs, 3-0

June 4, 2014

North Little Rock, AR - A trio of southpaws -- LHP Kyle Hald, LHP Lee Stoppelman and LHP Justin Wright -- combined to lead the Springfield Cardinals to the 3-0 shutout win against the Arkansas Travelers before 3,289 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Wednesday night. It is the Cardinals fifth shutout victory of the season.

The Cardinals (27-31) cracked the scoreless tie early, striking for a pair of runs in the top of the second against LHP Michael Roth (L, 4-4). With one away, DH Jonathan Rodriguez singled himself on. 3B Patrick Wisdom then belted a two-run home run inside the left-field foul pole, swinging Springfield ahead, 2-0.

The Cardinals padded the lead with another tally in the top of the third. C Cody Stanley lined a base hit to left field to start the stanza. One out later, LF Chris Swauger chopped a single to left, moving Stanley to second. Rodriguez then brought Stanley home with an RBI single to right field, making it 3-0.

The three runs proved to be more than enough run support for Hald (W, 5-1), who dealt 6.2 scoreless innings against the Travs (28-29). He allowed only four hits and three walks, while striking out four before giving way to LHP Lee Stoppelman with two on and two outs in the seventh. Stoppelman not only got the Cardinals out of the seventh, but then struck out a pair in a scoreless eighth. LHP Justin Wright (S, 4) took over for the bottom of the ninth and closed the Cardinals 3-0 shutout win with a scoreless final frame.
