Missions avoid sweep in finale, 3-2

April 12, 2014

San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Missions edged the Springfield Cardinals, 3-2, to avoid being swept by the Cards before 4,393 fans at Wolff Stadium on Saturday night.

The Cardinals (3-6) again struck first, cracking the scoreless tie against RHP Justin Hancock (W, 1-1) in the top of the second inning. With one down, C Cody Stanley singled himself on, before racing all the way home on an RBI double down the left field line by 3B Patrick Wisdom, lifting Springfield into the 1-0 lead.

The Cards doubled the early advantage with another run in the top of the third. RHP Sam Gaviglio (L, 0-2) started the inning with a single, his first career hit. Gaviglio moved to second on a groundout, took third on a base hit by RF Rafael Ortega and then scored on an RBI fielder's choice from CF James Ramsey, making it 2-0.

After Gaviglio tossed three perfect innings to start his evening, the Missions (5-4) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a walk by CF Travis Jankowski to start the inning, 2B Cory Spangenberg got the Missions on the board with an RBI triple. He then scored from third on an RBI base hit by SS Jace Peterson, tying the game. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, before a wild pitch brought in the go-ahead run for San Antonio. Gaviglio got out of it by striking out the side, but not before the Missions offense tilted the lead in their favor, 3-2.

The Cardinals threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two down, but RHP Dennis O'Grady dealt an inning-ending strikeout to escape the jam. RHP Johnny Barbato (S, 1) then tossed a scoreless ninth, closing the 3-2 win for San Antonio. The Cardinals received scoreless relief from LHP Danny Miranda (1.0 inning) and LHP Justin Wright (2.0 innings).
