Travs come back to swipe series opener at Hammons Field

August 1, 2014

Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers came from behind in the final three innings to take a 6-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,195 fans at Hammons Field on Thursday night.

After LHP Jonathan Cornelius tossed his fourth straight scoreless inning to start his outing, the Cardinals (17-23, 51-59) cracked the scoreless tie against RHP Orangel Arenas in the bottom of the fourth. With one down, C Cody Stanley smoked his 11th double of the campaign to right field, sparking the offense. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez followed with a sharp single to left field, putting runners at the corners. 2B Breyvic Valera wasted no time bringing in Stanley, ripping his first pitch to right-center field for an RBI single and the 1-0 lead. With runners at the corners and 3B Patrick Wisdom at the plate, the Cardinals pulled off a successful delayed double steal, with Valera nabbing second base and Rodriguez darting home to make it 2-0.

Cornelius kept the lead intact through his first six scoreless innings, scattering only four hits and keeping the Travelers (22-18, 56-54) off the board. However, Arkansas broke through in the top of the seventh against the southpaw. After C Jett Bandy worked a walk, 1B Michael Snyder sent a two-run homer over the left field wall, squaring the score at 2-2.

Cardinals LHP Ryan Sherriff kept it tied with 1.1 perfect innings of relief, but Arkansas swung in front in the top of the eighth against RHP Seth Blair (L, 4-7). 3B Brian Hernandez worked a one-out walk to reach base, before flying all the way around on an RBI triple by DH Mike Bianucci, lifting Arkansas into the 3-2 lead.

RHP Sam Tuivailala retired the final out in the eighth stranding a pair of runners, but Arkansas padded the lead against the right-hander in the top of the ninth. After a groundout, SS Eric Stamets sliced a double to right-center. Former Cardinal and current Travelers LF Adam Melker then brought Stamets in from second base with an RBI single, taking second on a bobble in right field. 2B Alex Yarbrough worked a walk, before both runners moved up on a groundout. DH Kaleb Cowart then brought both men in with a two-run single to shallow left field, stretching the Travelers advantage to 6-2.

After Arenas lasted the first six frames for Arkansas, a trio of Travelers provided one scoreless relief inning apiece. RHP Kevin Johnson (W, 3-3) dealt the seventh, before RHP Cam Bedrosian came in for the eighth. RHP Trevor Gott closed the 6-2 win for Arkansas with a scoreless ninth.
