Tulsa takes homestand opener at Hammons Field

June 7, 2014

Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers opened the series with an 11-0 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 6,269 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday night.

Springfield RHP Kurt Heyer (L, 2-3) and Tulsa RHP Dan Winkler both were dominant out of the gates, alternating scoreless frames to start their duel. Winkler kept the Cardinals (28-33) hitless through his 3.2 innings before leaving the game due to injury.

Heyer matched Winkler by keeping the Drillers (34-26) bats at bay through his first five scoreless frames, before Tulsa broke through in the top of the sixth inning. 1B Ryan Casteel started the sixth with a pop up to the right side that fell in safely when 1B Jonathan Rodriguez lost it in the sun. Casteel ended up at second on the play, before C Dustin Garneau brought him in one out later with an RBI double. RF Tyler Massey scored Garneau with an RBI triple, and then 3B Joey Wong capped the rally with an RBI sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead.

Tulsa kept swinging away in the seventh and eighth against the Cards bullpen. After a pair of one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases in the seventh, an RBI triple from LF Brian Humphries and an RBI single by 1B Harold Riggins stretched it to a 7-0 lead. The Drillers dealt their final blows with an RBI single by SS Cristhian Adames and a three-run home run from Casteel in the eighth, accounting for the eventual final score in the 11-0 Tulsa win.
