Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers took the middle game of the series, 5-0, against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,826 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday evening.
The Drillers (27-34, 65-65) opened an early lead with one run in the top of the first against RHP Kurt Heyer (L, 5-11). With two away, 2B Taylor Featherston skied a solo home run over the right field fence, lifting the Drillers into the early 1-0 advantage.
Heyer dug in and posted the next three innings in scoreless fashion, but the Drillers added a pair in the top of the fifth. With two on and two down, C Chris O'Dowd rocketed a two-run double to right-center field, opening the lead to 3-0.
Meanwhile, Tulsa RHP Ryan Arrowood (W, 7-0) tossed a gem for the Drillers, keeping the Cardinals (29-32, 63-68) bats at bay through his five no-hit frames.
Heyer then retired the first two outs in the sixth in quick order, but Tulsa rallied for an additional run. LF Brian Humphries kept the inning going with a single, before an RBI double by 1B Will Swanner made it 4-0.
The Drillers continued the attack with another two-out rally in the top of the seventh. With two down, O'Dowd laid down a bunt single to the left side of the infield that was scooped quickly by Heyer. Heyer tried to force a throw to get the runner, but fired it wide of first base, enabling O'Dowd to get to second on the play. He then came in on an RBI single by Featherston, increasing the lead to 5-0.
LHP Lee Stoppelman and RHP Sam Tuivailala combined to toss 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Cards bullpen, with Stoppelman striking out the side in the eighth and Tuivailala dealing three straight strikeouts in the ninth.
However, Drillers RHP Shane Broyles (2.2 innings), RHP Nate Striz (0.1 innings) and LHP Kraig Sitton countered with scoreless relief, closing the Tulsa win, 5-0.
