Gotay and O'Neill selected as Postseason All-Stars

August 28, 2013

The Texas League has announced that Springfield Cardinals 3B Ruben Gotay and LF Mike O'Neill have been named to the 2013 Texas League Postseason All-Star Team. The exclusive Postseason All-Star Team is made up of the league's top players from both divisions, consisting of only 12 spots for position players and nine for pitchers.

Gotay, who was also a 2013 Midseason All-Star, has put together one of the finest seasons of any player in the league this year. The 30-year old native of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico has compiled a .277 average with 16 home runs and 86 RBIs through 127 games this year. He currently ranks 2nd in the league in RBIs and runs (73), as well as 4th in doubles (30), tied for 4th in hits (132) and 3rd in walks (67).

The former Major Leaguer put together a team-high 10-game hitting streak with 16 hits from June 13 - 23. Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 31st round of the 2000 draft, he was signed by St. Louis as a free agent in March.

O'Neill, 25, put together a .320 batting average with two homers and 35 RBIs through 98 games with the Cardinals before being promoted to the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A) on July 31. The Riverside, California native was leading the league in walks (71) and runs (66) at the time of his promotion, and still ranks 2nd in average, walks and on-base percentage (.431).

O'Neill put together two on-base streaks of more than 20 games - 22 games from April 19 - May 13 and 21 games from July 8 - July 29, reaching base in a remarkable 86 of 98 total games played for Springfield. Also a 2013 Midseason All-Star, O'Neill was drafted by St. Louis in the 31st round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Southern California.
