PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 9, 2021) – The Jupiter Hammerheads escaped Clover Park with a wild 7-5 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday in the series finale.

The Hammerheads scored the tie-breaking run on a controversial play in the eighth inning. With one out and a runner on third base, Jupiter’s Nasim Nunez hit a sharp ground ball to Mets shortstop Branden Fryman who quickly threw home in plenty of time to get JD Orr. However, the home plate umpire ruled that catcher Matt Dyer did not tag Orr and called Orr safe to give the Hammerheads a 6-5 lead.

Jupiter added an insurance run later in inning on a two-out RBI single from Victor Mesa Jr.

Justin Sterner was able to hold the Mets off the scoreboard over the final two innings to preserve the 7-5 win. The Mets ended up taking four of the six games in the series.

The Hammerheads jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. The Mets were still able to battle back and take a brief 5-4 lead. Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered a two-run single in the fourth to tie the game 4-4. Shervyen Newton put a ball in play later in the inning that resulted in an error which allowed Cole Kleszcz to score the go-ahead run.

The Hammerheads tied the game 5-5 on a two-out RBI single from Mesa, Jr. in the sixth inning.

Crow-Armstrong went 3 for 5 in the loss. Francisco Alvarez was 1 for 3 with double, two walks, RBI and run.

The Mets (4-2) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday when they begin a six-game road series against the Daytona Tortugas. First pitch at Jackie Robinson Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
