FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 1, 2021) – The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels edged the St. Lucie Mets 1-0 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.

The Mighty Mussels scored the only run in the seventh inning. Willie Joe Garry hit a RBI ground with one out and the bases loaded. The situation was set up by two walks and an infield single.

The Mets had two good chances to score. They loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning but two grounders resulted in two force outs at the plate. The third out was a routine ground out to third base.

In the fifth inning the Mets had runners at second and third with no outs but Mussels pitchers Regi Grace and Matthew Swain combined for three consecutive strikeouts.

The loss spoiled a good start from Oscar Rojas who made his team debut after coming down from Brooklyn. Rojas blanked Fort Myers over five innings. He gave up just two singles and struck out four. Rojas only threw 66 pitches.

Brailin Gonzalez and Matt Cleveland chipped in with two scoreless innings.

The Mets only had two hits in the game. Both came from Joe Suozzi who was added from the Mets complex team before the game. He went 2 for 4 with a double.

The Mets drew six walks and were hit by three pitches but could not capitalize with a run. They went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 base runners.

Of the Mighty Mussels three hits only one left the infield, a first inning grounder into right field by Aaron Sabato.

Grace received a no-decision. He held the Mets to one hit over 4.1 innings. Swain was credited with the win after pitching 2.2 innings of relief with six strikeouts.

The Mets (16-9) and Mighty Mussels (12-13) play the second game of their series at Hammond Stadium on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
