FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 19, 2019) - The St. Lucie Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Fort Myers Miracle with a rousing 8-6 comeback win on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.
The Mets, who trailed 5-0 after four innings, scored four runs in the ninth. They loaded the bases on three consecutive singles from Mitch Ghelfi, Cody Bohanek and Nick Meyer. Carlos Cortes then ripped a two-run game-tying single which chased reliever Joe Record.
Quinn Brodey gave the Mets a 7-6 lead on a RBI single against new reliever Anthony Vizcaya. Jacob Zanon added on with a sac fly.
Joseph Shaw induced a game-ending 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the ninth. Shaw was credited with his first win of the season after pitching two shutout innings.
Walker Lockett was added to the Mets roster from the Triple-A Syracuse injured list prior to the game and made his first start of the season. Lockett was rusty, allowing four runs on four hits in the first inning. He bounced back to pitch a scoreless second.
Lewin Diaz hit a long home run in the bottom of the third to extend the Miracle lead to 5-0. Ironically, the Mets lost a 5-0 lead in the first game of their road trip. They finished the trip by winning a game they were down 5-0.
The Mets comeback started in the top of the fifth when Manny Rodriguez laced a RBI double and Bohanek hit a sac fly to make it 5-2.
The Miracle got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Royce Lewis scored on a Marcel Renteria wild pitch to make it 6-2. Renteria ended up giving the Mets three quality innings behind Lockett.
The Mets made it 6-4 with a pair of run in the sixth. Jeremy Vasquez scored on a passed ball and Brodey scored on a double steal.
Thomas McIlraith kept the Miracle at bay by tossing two scoreless innings after Renteria.
Rodriguez, Ghelfi and Brodey had two hits apiece.
The Mets (22-19) finished 4-3 on their seven game road trip after starting 0-3. Now they return home to First Data Field to play 11 games in 11 days. First up is a doubleheader against the Dunedin Blue Jays on Monday. Game 1 starts at 4 p.m.
