PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 15, 2018) - The St. Lucie Mets clipped the Palm Beach Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday at First Data Field to finish off a series sweep.
Anthony Kay did not allow an earned run over six excellent innings to get the win. The first round draft pick from 2016 has tossed a quality start in all three outings with St. Lucie. He lowered his ERA to 1.86.
Leadoff hitter Luis Carpio went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBI.
Dale Burdick hit a one-out triple in the fifth inning. Carpio followed with an infield single to bring home Burdick to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.
Kay worked around a two-out walk in the sixth inning. Austin McGeorge pitched two scoreless innings behind Kay. McGeorge stranded two runners in scoring position in the seventh.
Matt Pobereyko worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to end the game. He is now 7 for 7 in save chances.
Carpio got the scoring started for the Mets. He slugged a homer on the first pitch Cardinals starter Evan Krucyznski threw in the game.
Jeremy Vasquez hit a two-out single in the first inning. Ali Sanchez followed with a RBI double to make it 2-0.
The Cardinals took advantage of a walk and an error to start the fourth. Brian O'Keefe scored on a Shane Billings single. Andy Young scored the tying run on a sac fly from J.B. Woodman. Kay got out of further trouble with a pick off.
The tie didn't last long, as the Burdick and Carpio combo struck for the go-ahead run in the fifth off Krucyznski.
The Mets (10-13, 37-53) start a road series at the Fort Myers Miracle on Monday. First pitch from Hammond Stadium is 7 p.m.
