FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 16, 2018) - The Fort Myers Miracle jumped out to a big early lead and went on to defeat the St. Lucie Mets 7-4 on Monday at Hammond Stadium.
Travis Blankenhorn ripped a two-run double in the first inning and the Miracle scored four runs on five hits in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead
The Mets scored three runs in the fifth inning before making an out to cut the deficit to 6-4. However, Miracle reliever Ryan Mason came out of the bullpen and shut down the Mets for 3.1 innings.
Mets starter Joe Cavallaro suffered the brunt of the Miracle attack. After six straight Miracle batters reached base against him in the second inning, Cavallaro settled down to retire eight straight to end his outing.
Cavallaro ended up allowing six earned runs on seven hits over four innings. He struck out five.
Gene Cone, Mike Paez and Wuilmer Becerra had multi-hit games for the Mets.
Cone, Paez, Andrés Giménez and Anthony Dimino each hit a double.
Miracle starter Clark Beeker was tagged for four runs in 4.2 innings. Mason didn't give up a run in 3.1 innings of relief to get the win. Hector Lujan tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.
The Mets (10-14, 37-54) and Miracle (11-14, 29-54) play the second game of their series on Tuesday. First pitch from Hammond Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
