PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (August 17, 2019) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs pulled away for an 8-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Saturday at Charlotte Sports Park.
The game was highly competitive for most of the night. The Mets trailed 2-1 with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. Reliever Justin Marsden was able to get a key strikeout to end the threat and the Stone Crabs took off from there.
Mets starting pitcher Tylor Megill returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and the first two Stone Crabs singled. The Mets then went to the bullpen and Kaleo Johnson greeted Carlos Hernandez with a two-run double to open up a 4-1 lead.
Johnson scored later in the inning on a ground ball that turned into an error. Wander Franco drew a bases loaded walk to force in the fourth run of the inning to make it 6-1.
The Stone Crabs took advantage of a dropped popup in the seventh inning when Garrett Whitley ripped another two-run double to put the Stone Crabs up 8-1.
The only run the Mets scored came on a leadoff home run by Cody Bohanek in the fifth inning. That cut the deficit to 2-1 at the time. The homer remains the only run the Mets have scored in the series so far.
Charlotte starter Tobias Myers scattered four hits over five innings to get the win. He retired 10 Mets in a row at one point.
The Stone Crabs got contributions from two Tampa Bay Rays rehabbers. Joey Wendle (right wrist) reached base four times and drove in two runs. Brandon Lowe (right shin) went 1 for 4 with a walk.
For the second straight night Jeremy Vaquez went 1 for 3 with a single and a walk.
Megill was charged with four runs (three earned) in five innings. His streak of three straight starts earning a win was snapped.
The Mets lost their fourth consecutive game, which is their longest losing streak of the second half. The Stone Crabs padded their division lead to 5.5 games over the Mets with just 14 games remaining.
The Mets (35-22, 67-56) and Stone Crabs (41-17, 76-48) conclude their series at Charlotte Sports Park on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
