PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 22, 2019) - The Clearwater Threshers completed a three-game sweep of the St. Lucie Mets by winning Thursday's finale 5-0 at First Data Field.
Threshers starter James McArthur blanked the Mets over 5.2 innings to get the win. He gave up six hits but only walked one and struck out six.
Reliever Michael Gomez was shaky, walking three batters in 1.1 innings, but he did not surrender a hit or run.
Zach Warren was perfect over the final two innings to close out the game in non-save situation.
The Threshers scored all the runs they needed within the first three batters of the game. Jhailyn Ortiz led off the game with a walk. He scored on a long RBI triple by Raul Rivas to make it 1-0. Rivas then scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead.
Mets starter Luc Rennie gave up eight hits in just four innings, but he did not break. He faced nine batters with runners in scoring position but only surrendered two hits that led to runs in those spots. He was charged with three total runs.
The Mets offense continued to struggle as the team's losing streak expanded to eight games. The Mets were shut out for the second straight day and they did not score a run in the final 23.1 innings of the series. The Mets have only scored seven total runs in the eight straight defeats.
Jed Lowrie continued his rehab assignment after Wednesday's scheduled off day. Lowrie went 1 for 4 with a double as the DH.
Blake Tiberi went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and a walk from the leadoff spot.
Cody Bohanek doubled and drew a walk.
Jeremy Vasquez went 2 for 3 with two singles.
The Mets best chance to score came in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Gomez was able to get Manny Rodriguez to ground into a hard out to third baseman Madison Stokes.
Luke Miller went 3 for 5 with a home run for the Threshers.
The Mets (35-26, 67-60) continue their home stand on Friday by welcoming the Jupiter Hammerheads to First Data Field. It's Back to School Night. Treasure Coast students and teachers can receive a free ticket by showing their school ID at the ticket window. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
