JUPITER, Fla. (July 19, 2018) - Palm Beach's Andy Young hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning to propel the Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Mets starter Blake Taylor limited the Cardinals to one run over five innings. He scattered five hits, walked two and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Cardinals starter Jake Walsh didn't allow an earned run in his 5.1 innings of work.
Three Palm Beach relievers - Jason Zgardowski, Colton Thomson and Yeison Medina - held the Mets off the scoreboard through the final 3.2 innings.
Medina pitched the final 1.2 innings to get the win.
The Cardinals scored their first run on a RBI single by Brian O'Keefe in the third inning.
The Mets scored their lone run in the fifth. Wuilmer Becerra hit a ball through the legs of third baseman Danny Hudzina and hustled into second base. Becerra would later score from third on a double play ball.
The bottom of the eighth was shaping up to be a quick inning for Adam Atkins after he retired the first two batters on a fly out and a strikeout. But O'Keefe kept the inning alive with a single. Young followed with a long homer to left, his 12th of the season.
Mike Paez went 2 for 3 in the loss. Luis Carpio singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Reliever Stephen Villines lowered his ERA to 0.68 with two scoreless innings.
The Mets (10-17, 37-57) and Cardinals (13-15, 52-40) play the middle game of their series at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
