Spikes pitcher joins Godoy, Hudzina as recipients of perseverance honor

State College Spikes pitcher Levi MaVorhis  became the first player to earn one of the club's 2017 awards on Monday as he was named the 2017 Josiah Viera Perseverance Award winner in a pre-game ceremony.

MaVorhis is the third recipient of the award, which is annually selected by Viera, the Spikes' honorary bench coach. The right-hander joins catcher Jose Godoy , who won the honor in 2015, and infielder Danny Hudzina , who was chosen in 2016, on the honor roll for the award.

The Josiah Viera Perseverance Award was introduced in 2014 as a tribute to the Spikes' honorary bench coach. Josiah faces challenges everyday due to Hutchinson/Gilford progeria but has become a rallying point for the Spikes over the past five seasons thanks to his determination, perseverance and joyous spirit in the face of adversity.

MaVorhis began the season in the starting rotation, but quickly adapted to a long relief role and became a linchpin in the bullpen. The former non-drafted free agent out of Kansas State is 1-1 with two saves and 2.16 ERA in 16 appearances, including three starts, this year through September 3. MaVorhis has recorded 38 strikeouts and just 11 walks over 41 2/3 innings during that span.

The Spikes' team MVP and Pitcher of the Year awards will be announced prior to the regular season finale on September 7 against the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. First pitch for that game is set for 7:05 p.m.

Tickets for each of the four games left in the Spikes' final regular season homestand of the year are currently on sale through the Spikes Ticket Office by calling (814) 272-1711 or by visiting in person. Fans can also buy and download single-game tickets for each game by clicking here.
