Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes pitcher Andrew Summerville has been named the New York-Penn League's Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 21-27, 2017.
Summerville won the award after striking out a career-high seven batters and allowing just one hit and two walks to Williamsport over seven shutout innings on Friday. The NYPL All-Star allowed the hit and both walks in the first inning, and notched his fourth victory of the year.
The Cardinals' 2017 12th-round draft choice out of Stanford, Summerville is now 4-0 on the season with a 1.63 ERA and one save over 11 appearances, eight of them starts. The Seattle native has logged three consecutive quality starts of six innings or more allowing three earned runs or less, and has whiffed 43 batters while walking 19 over 49 2/3 innings.
Summerville becomes the third Spikes player this year to win a weekly honor from the NYPL, and earns the fourth award for a Spike in the last five weeks. Scott Hurst was named NYPL Player of the Week for the week of August 14-20. Evan Mendoza earned consecutive Player of the Week awards for July 24-30 and July 31-August 6 before being promoted to Single-A Peoria.
The four NYPL Player of the Week awards earned by Spikes this season are the most in a single season since the club earned three Player of the Week and two Pitcher of the Week awards in 2010.
Spikes fans can catch Summerville and the rest of the club in action at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the final week of the 2017 regular season during a five-game homestand from Sunday through Thursday. The Auburn Doubledays (Washington Nationals) will serve as the opposition for the first three games, with the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) in town for a pair of contests to finish the regular season.
