STATEN ISLAND - Andres Chaparro led off the top of the eighth with a home run to begin a five-run frame, as the Staten Island Yankees surged ahead of the West Virginia Black Bears 6-3 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Monday.
In the Camp Day affair that began with an 11:00 a.m. first pitch, West Virginia took an early lead when Travis Swaggerty scored on a Staten Island defensive miscue in the top of the fourth inning. But Staten Island answered back quickly, as Alex Junior led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple to right field, and scored on an RBI single to left off the bat of Jesus Bastidas.
Both teams were held in check for the next few frames, as each team's starting pitcher performed admirably. Black Bears right-hander Aaron Shortridge struck out nine batters in five frames, but it was the Yankees righty, Roansy Contreras, who had a truly strong outing. Making his fifth start of the season, the 18-year old struck out eight batters in a career-high seven innings, allowing only one unearned run on three hits and a single walk.
Despite his performance, the score remained tied heading into the bottom of the eighth, when Chaparro smoked a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall for his third home run of the season The long ball broke the deadlock, and put the Baby Bombers up by the score of 2-1.
The scoring did not start there, however, as Eduardo Torrealba immediately followed the home run by smacking a double, and Jackson Thoreson walked. Then, after they each advanced a base on a wild pitch, Ricardo Ferreira drove them both home on a ground rule double that bounced over the left field fence. Two batters later, Ferreira scored on a single up the middle by Bastidas, who scored the fifth and final run of the frame on a base hit by Junior Soto.
The Black Bears did push across a pair of runs across in the top of the ninth, but could not muster a rally any further, as reliever Drew Finley limited the damage to close out the game and earn win (2-0).
With the victory, the Yankees completed their second consecutive home series sweep, and closed out their six-game home stand with a perfect 6-0 record. They have also now won seven games in a row, 12 of 13, and are 13-2 in the month of July.
The Baby Bombers will now look to continue their winning ways as they head out on the road, beginning a three-game series tomorrow against the Vermont Lake Monsters in Burlington, Vt. Following that set, the Yankees will return to Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday, July 20, to begin a three-game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats
