STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-The Staten Island Yankees defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 1-0 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark to complete a sweep of the weekend series.
It was all about the pitching on Sunday as Blakely Brown threw six shutout innings of one hit ball for the Yankees and the bullpen backed him up well. Bryan Blanton and Barrett Loseke would combine to finish the final three innings with Loseke getting the save.
For Mahoning Valley, Carlos Vargas also pitched well throwing seven innings of one run, two hit ball, but was the tough luck loser on the day.
The lone run of the game was driven in by Saturday night's walk-off hero Josh Smith in the bottom of the first as his sacrifice fly drove in Ezequiel Duran who had tripled earlier in the inning to give the Yankees the lead. Staten Island's great pitching made it stand up.
Staten Island has now won seven of their last eight games overall and head out on a six-game road trip to play the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Aberdeen Ironbirds. The Yankees then return home on Aug. 11 to play the Brooklyn Cyclones at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
