STATEN ISLAND-The Staten Island Yankees completed the doubleheader sweep of the Connecticut Tigers with a 6-4 win in game two at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George on Wednesday night.
Pitching was the order of the day at the start as Yankees starter Wellington Diaz threw five shutout innings and Connecticut's Carson Lance answered with four strong innings of his own.
However, Staten Island (2-3) picked up their second win of the season behind late inning drama and timely hitting.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Yankees broke the deadlock with four runs all stemming from Connecticut mistakes. The biggest being a dropped fly ball in right field that scored the first Yankee run. Jesus Bastidas and Oswald Peraza added RBI singles to extend the lead to 4-0.
However, Connecticut (2-4) would respond with three extra base hits in the top of the sixth to tie the game up at four heading into the bottom of the inning.
A leadoff double from Isaiah Pasteur set the stage for a Ricky Surum single and then a wild pitch that allowed Pasteur to score the go-ahead run. Alex Junior then drove in his first run of the season with an RBI single that made it 6-4 and gave Staten Island a big insurance run.
Marcus Evey in his Yankee debut came in and got the final five outs to secure a doubleheader sweep and a series win.
The Yankees will go for the series sweep on Thursday in the final game of this three-game set with Connecticut. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
