STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-The Staten Island Yankees swept the doubleheader with the Lowell Spinners on Thursday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.
The Yankees won the opener 3-0 behind a fantastic start from Nelvin Correa who threw a complete game shutout and allowed just three hits in the victory.
Isaiah Pasteur's sacrifice fly opened the scoring in the fifth inning before two out RBI hits in the sixth inning from Mitchell Robinson and Carlos Narvaez added some insurance before Correa closed it out.
Staten Island would add another win in the second game of the doubleheader in what turned out to be a slugfest.
Abismael Villaman had a solid start for the Yankees going five innings and giving up two unearned runs. The Yankee offense backed him up as two-run home runs from Josh Smith, Jake Sanford and Isaiah Pasteur staked the Baby Bombers to a 6-2 lead.
However, Lowell would rally starting in the sixth inning with a two run home run from Marino Campana and then a solo home run by Jonathan Diaz. In the seventh inning, the Spinners took the lead on a two run home run by Joe Davis.
The Yankees were trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but had a response.
Andres Chapparo tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the inning and then the bases were walked loaded. With one out in the inning up stepped Matt Pita who singled in the game winning run to win the game for Staten Island 8-7.
It is the fifth walk-off win of the season for Staten Island and they will go for the series sweep tomorrow night against the Spinners at Richmond County Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
