STATEN ISLAND - Harold Cortijo pitched 5.1 scoreless frames, and Aaron McGarrity, Chase Hodson and Daniel Alvarez combined to throw 3.2 innings of shutout relief, as the Staten Island Pizza Rats blanked the West Virginia Black Bears 1-0 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Saturday Night.
Cortijo (2-0), making his fourth start of the year, set a career-high in innings pitched after pitching into the sixth inning. The right-hander struck out three batters, issuing only two hits and one walk, and not allowing any Black Bear to reach second base.
McGarrity followed Cortijo and pitched 1.2 innings while allowing only two hits and striking out three. Hodson then struck out one batter in a 1-2-3 eighth, and Alvarez followed that up by K'ing 2 in a perfect ninth frame.
Offensively, Alex Junior scored the games lone run in the bottom of the fourth, when he led off with a bunt single down the third base line, and came home on an RBI triple by Brandon Lockrige to deep center field.
With the win, Staten Island improves their record to 15-13 after their fifth win in a row, and 10th in the last 11 games. They are also now 3-0 as the Pizza Rats, which they will play as for each Saturday home game this season.
The Staten Island Yankees will return to action tomorrow, at 4:00 p.m. On the mound for Staten Island will be Shawn Semple, with Michael Flynn getting the start for West Virginia.
