WSIA to Broadcast 2014 Staten Island Yankee Home Games

June 5, 2014

STATEN ISLAND- The Staten Island Yankees are pleased to announce that the College of Staten Island's student-run radio station, WSIA, will broadcast all 38 home games this season.

Beginning with Opening Day on Friday, June 13, against the Brooklyn Cyclones, WSIA's game coverage will be available on 88.9 FM.

"We are delighted to bring back our Yankee games, in collaboration with the College of Staten Island, on WSIA," says Staten Island Yankees CEO Steve Violetta. "It's a win-win for everyone: The students that want to go into sports broadcasting get live, real-world experience, and the team gets to bring the excitement and drama of Staten Island Yankees baseball out of the ballpark, and onto the airwaves for all our fans to enjoy."

This relationship with the student broadcasters is particularly special to Violetta as he was a Broadcast major at Central Michigan University. The Staten Island CEO cites the live sports experience he received at CMU as the number one defining reason he got his first job out of college doing TV play-by-play.

"WSIA is thrilled to partner with the Staten Island Yankees this summer," says WSIA General Manager Philip Masciantonio. "As Staten Island's only radio station, we take pride in using our platform to highlight the best of our borough. Working with Staten Island's premiere professional sports franchise is an amazing opportunity for our students, many of whom aspire to have careers in sports broadcasting."

WSIA is Staten Island's only radio station, broadcasting on 88.9 FM since 1981. Founded by a group of students at the College of Staten Island, the station has fostered learning and personal growth of CSI students for over 30 years, as well as provided a platform for local and otherwise unavailable music and programming in the Staten Island community. WSIA's programming is available 24 hours a day on the air and online at www.wsia.fm.

The College of Staten Island is a senior college within The City University of New York (CUNY) offering associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. CSI is home to a School of Business, School of Education, School of Health Sciences, The Verrazano School Honor Program, and The Teacher Education Honors Academy (TEHA), and is also a select campus of the Macaulay Honors College University Scholars program.

The Staten Island Yankees are the Single A-Short Season Affiliate of the New York Yankees and play at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George. The Staten Island Yankees are six-time New York-Penn League Champions (2000, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011). For more information, visit siyanks.com.
