STATEN ISLAND-The Staten Island Yankees dropped the first game of a three-game set with the Tri-City ValleyCats 5-2 on Sunday at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
Through the sixth inning, the Yankees had a 2-0 lead on the strength of an Eric Wagaman home run and a Kyle Gray RBI single. The Baby Bombers were also led on the mound by a career pitching performance from Roansy Contreras who threw career-best six shutout innings had a career-high 10 strikeouts.
The ValleyCats rallied in the seventh for three runs capped off by a Juan Pineda two-run double. Seth Beer added a solo home run in the eighth inning and Tri-City would add on to win it by three runs.
ValleyCats reliever Felipe Tejada picked up the win and Yankees reliever Abel Duarte was tagged with the loss.
Tomorrow night these two will do battle again at Richmond County Bank Ballpark starting at 7p.m. The Yankees will start Juan De Pala and Tri-City will counter with Chad Donato.
