STATEN ISLAND - Roansy Contreras struck out a career-high seven batters in five innings of work, and Frederick Cuevas went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, but the Brooklyn Cyclones pulled ahead late as they handed the Staten Island Yankees a 4-2 defeat at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, on Sunday afternoon.
Brooklyn took an early lead with an RBI single by Dionis Paulino in the first inning, and a solo home run by Brian Sharp to lead off the top of the second.
However, Contreras, the youngest pitcher to appear in the New York-Penn League this season at 18 years and 222 days old, rebounded from the early trouble to retire 10 of the last 12 batters he faced in his first start for Staten Island. In the meantime, the Yankees bats backed him up to tie the game after Canaan Smith drove home Ricardo Ferreira with an RBI single in the fourth inning, Cuevas scored on a Jesus Bastidas ground out in the fifth.
Unfortunately, Brooklyn took back the lead with one out in the top of the eighth, when Wagner Lagrange blooped a single into left field that brought home David Thompson from second base, and they added an insurance run one inning later when Cyclones catcher Kevin Hall scored on a bases-loaded walk.
The Baby Bombers will now head on the road for a three-game set in Lowell, Mass., to take on the Spinners before returning home to Staten Island on Thursday, June 21 to start a six-game homestand with a 7:00 p.m. game against the Aberdeen IronBirds.
