YANKEES WIN 3-1 IN OPENING DAY THRILLER

The Staten Island Yankees opened up the 2018 season with a 3-1 victory over the crosstown rival Brooklyn Cyclones at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday night.

STATEN ISLAND-The Staten Island Yankees opened up the 2018 season with a 3-1 victory over the crosstown rival Brooklyn Cyclones at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday night.  Staten Island was led by six no-hit innings from starting pitcher Matt Sauer who outdueled Brooklyn's Christian James into the seventh inning.  The Yankees

STATEN ISLAND-The Staten Island Yankees opened up the 2018 season with a 3-1 victory over the crosstown rival Brooklyn Cyclones at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday night.  
Staten Island was led by six no-hit innings from starting pitcher Matt Sauer who outdueled Brooklyn's Christian James into the seventh inning.  
The Yankees offense threatened throughout the game and finally broke through in the seventh when first baseman Eric Wagaman doubled and then came around to score after a balk by Cyclones reliever Trent Johnson.  
Designated hitter Frederick Cuevas then followed that up with a solo home run and the Yankees would add to the lead in the eighth when left fielder Canaan Smith picked up a run scoring double to extend the lead to the 3-1.  
Garrett Mundell would come in to close the game out in the ninth inning improving the Yankees Opening Day home record to 10-11 all-time.  
Chase Hodson got the win in relief for the Baby Bombers and Brooklyn's Trent Johnson picked up the loss.
The Yankees and Cyclones continue their series as the scene shifts to MCU Park for game two of the three game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
