STATEN ISLAND - Matt Sauer struck out a career-high seven batters, and Junior Soto went 2 for 5 with two doubles and two runs batted in, as the Staten Island Yankees defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-2 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark on Friday night.
Soto wasted little time getting the Baby Bombers on the board, driving home Brandon Lockridge with his first RBI two-bagger in the first inning, before scoring along with Kyle Gray on Eric Wagaman's two-run single, as the Yankees jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning.
The Scrappers cut the deficit to one with two runs in the top of the third, but Soto pushed Staten Island's lead back up to three in the bottom half of the frame, driving home once more with his second double of the night, before scoring on a Scrappers throwing error.
The three-run cushion was more than enough for the Yankees pitching staff, as Sauer (2-1) went five strong frames, allowing only the two runs (one earned) off of three hits.
He was relieved by Frank German, who struck out five while allowing only one hit and one walk in three scoreless frames, and Garrett Mundell, who earned his second save of the year by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
With the win, Staten Island has now won nine of 10 games, improving their record to 14-13 in the process. They will now host the West Virginia Black Bears in a three-game set beginning tomorrow. For the third of five times this year, Staten Island will play as the Pizza Rats, as they will for each 2018 Saturday home game. First pitch will be at 7:00pm.
