The Ports are gearing up for the 2020 Baseball by the Books Reading Program! Stockton, California has one of the lowest literacy rates in the United States. According to the University of Pacific's 2018 San Joaquin Literacy Report Card, only 39% of children in San Joaquin County read at or above grade level by grade three. To help address and improve the low literacy rates in San Joaquin County, the Stockton Ports have designed a literacy campaign to help get kids excited about reading.
Each Baseball by the Books program participant receives a special Ports bookmark at the start of the program. Before the program starts, the Ports hold a "Bookmark Design Contest" and student participants can send in their bookmark design. This year's winner is Marvin from San Joaquin Elementary School! His original design features the Ports logo in the night sky, with a boat floating on a baseball.
Teachers set personalized reading goals for each student to achieve during the 6-week program. Students who complete the program receive a voucher for two free tickets to their school's selected Ports game. The 2020 Baseball by the Books reading program dates are Monday, January 20th - Friday, February 28th.
The Baseball by the Books program had more than 37,000 students register for the 2019 program and each school received a visit from our mascot Splash to help promote reading. This year we have 58 schools in San Joaquin County registered! We are currently stuffing envelopes and bookmarks for each class participating to be mailed out, and Splash can't wait to visit all the schools in the New Year.
