MODESTO, Ca. - The Nuts pounded out 13 hits and scored five times with two outs as the Ports fell 8-5 to their North Division rival on a warm Saturday night at John Thurman Field in Modesto.

The Nuts (35-24) jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of first inning against Ports' starter Pedro Santos. With runners on first and third and no outs after back-to-back singles by Victor Labrada and Noelvi Marte, Alberto Rodriguez beat out a potential double play ball for an RBI fielders' choice to make it 1-0 Modesto. After a single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, Trent Tinglestad lined a two-out single up the middle to drive in two runs and give the Nuts a 3-0 lead.

Trailing 4-0 after the Nuts scored an unearned run in the third, the Ports (25-34) got back into the ballgame with two runs in the fourth. Danny Bautista brought home the Ports' first run with an RBI single, following back-to-back hits by Junior Perez (double) and T.J. Schofield-Sam (single). After a Gavin Jones single loaded the bases, Jose Rivas walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-2.

With the bases loaded and one out, Nuts' reliever Kelvin Nuñez struck out Robert Puason and got Marcos Brito to pop out to leave the bases loaded.

The Nuts gave themselves a cushion with three more two-out runs in the sixth. With Brett Rodriguez on second base and two outs, Noelvi Marte singled up the middle off of Ed Baram to make it 5-2. After a double and a walk loaded the bases, Matt Scheffler singled to right field on the first pitch he saw from new Stockton pitcher Diego Granado to give Modesto a 7-2 lead.

Trailing by four heading into the ninth, Jose Rivas hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and the Ports brought the tying run to the plate but Travis Kuhn struck out Junior Perez to end the ballgame.

Nuñez (4-1) got the win for Modesto with three innings of two-run relief while allowing three hits including a home run to Joshwan Wright. Santos (2-2) took the loss for the Ports, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in three innings.

The Ports will look for a split in the series finale on Sunday at John Thurman Field in Modesto, with first pitch at 6:05 pm.
