STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports were shut out for the 11th time this season and by the narrowest of margins on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The San Jose Giants made a single run in the top of the seventh inning stand tall as they handed the Ports a 1-0 loss in the third game of their four-game set.
The Ports saw an early scoring chance fall by the wayside as they had runners at the corners with one out in the second inning. Giants starter Carlos Sano would strike out Santiago Chávez and then get Trace Loehr to ground out to end the inning and escape what would be his lone jam of the night as he went on to retire nine straight batters beginning with those two outs in the second.
Sano would be rendered a no-decision as he was lifted after a two-out single by Nate Mondou in the sixth. Ryan Walker (1-0), who made his California League debut, came on and walked Luke Persico but struck out Will Toffey with two aboard to end the inning. Sano tossed five-and-two-thirds scoreless frames and allowed two hits while walking three and striking out two.
Ports starter Matt Milburn (5-3), who at one point retired 11 consecutive batters, pitched into the seventh inning. With one out, Milburn surrendered a double to Dillon Dobson and then hit Tanner Murphy to put two aboard. After a strikeout of Brandon Van Horn for the second out, Milburn gave up a two-out RBI single to Bryce Johnson that scored Dobson with the game's lone run.
Milburn would suffer the tough-luck loss, going six-and-two-thirds innings and allowing just the one run on seven hits while striking out five.
Angel Duno pitched the final two-and-a-thirds innings scoreless for Stockton and worked around three hits allowed.
Walker, who pitched a third of an inning in his Cal-League debut, picked up the win for the Giants. Connor Overton (SV, 2) worked three scoreless frames to close out the game for the Giants and earned his second save of the season.
The Ports and Giants wrap up their four-game set on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Left-hander Zack Erwin (7-6, 4.83 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by San Jose right-hander DJ Myers (2-5, 4.83 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
