RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. - Stockton Ports starter Mithcell Jordan (7-5) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Sunday afternoon at Loan Mart Field. Though the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes spoiled the no-hit bid in the seventh, the shutout remained intact as Stockton earned its sixth shutout victory of the season, beating the Quakes by a final of 6-0 to set up the rubber game of the series on Monday night.
The Ports jumped in the run column in the second inning as Mickey McDonald came up with two on and two out and delivered a two-run triple to center to give Stockton a 2-0 lead. Those were the only runs allowed by Quakes starter Leo Crawford (4-4), who suffered the loss after going five innings and allowing seven hits while striking out eight.
Bryan Warzek took over for the Quakes in the sixth and, with runners at the corners and one out, saw Josh Watson hit a sac-fly to center to make it 3-0. After Ryan Gridley drew a walk to put runners at first and second, Trace Loehr took off on a steal of third base and the throw from Quakes catcher Connor Wong went into left field, allowing Loehr to score and make it 4-0. The Ports would add on via a two-run single by Jonah Bride that stretched the lead to 6-0.
Warzek allowed four runs on two hits while walking two in two-thirds of an inning. Connor Strain and Darien Nunez combined to work the final 3 1/3 innings for the Quakes without allowing a run.
Jordan, meanwhile, pitched around hit batters in the second and third and a two-out walk with two outs in the fourth, retiring seven consecutive batters going into the seventh. Devin Mann led off the seventh inning with a double off the left field wall to break up the no-hit bid, but Jordan recovered and set down the next three batters in succession to complete his outing.
Jordan earned the win, tossing a career-high seven innings and allowing just one hit while striking out seven.
Eric Mariñez came on to work the eighth and worked around leadoff singles in both the eighth and ninth innings to complete the shutout for Stockton.
The Ports and Quakes play the rubber game of their series on Monday night at Loan Mart Field. Xavier Altamirano (4-5, 4.54 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Rancho Cucamonga right-hander Michael Grove (0-3, 6.94 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
