MODESTO, Calif. - The Stockton Ports earned their 10th shutout victory of the season to close out a four-game road trip on Monday night at John Thurman Field. Stockton starter Matt Milburn (6-3) spun seven scoreless frames and Sandber Pimentel blasted a pair of home runs as the Ports earned a 7-0 victory over the Modesto Nuts to take the finale of their four-game set as the Ports took three of four.
Stockton's offense got off to a quick start as Will Toffey drove in two runs with a two-out double off Nuts starter Ashton Goudeau (1-1) for an early 2-0 lead. Goudeau would allow runs over the next three frames as Chase Calabuig provided a two-out RBI single in the second, Pimentel hit a solo homer in the third and a run scored on an error committed by third baseman Joe Rizzo in the fourth to run the Stockton lead to 5-0.
Goudeau would suffer the loss as he went five innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking five and striking out five.
Milburn, meanwhile, set down the first nine batters he faced, pitched around a pair of singles in the fourth, a single in the sixth and back-to-back one-out singles in the seventh. He would go on to earn the victory, tossing seven scoreless frames and allowing five hits while striking out three.
Pimentel provided two additional runs in the sixth on a two-run homer off Nuts reliever AJ Franks to make it a 7-0 contest. It marked Pimentel's third multi-homer game of the season.
Will Gilbert pitched a scoreless eighth and Angel Duno tossed a perfect ninth to close out the game and complete the shutout for the Ports.
Following a day off on Tuesday, the Ports open a six-game homestand starting with a three-game series versus the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday. Left-hander Zack Erwin (7-6, 5.05 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Logan Longwith (1-4, 7.93 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
