Box Score

MODESTO, Ca. – The Ports scored three times in the top of the first inning and the Stockton bullpen allowed just one earned run over six innings as the Ports concluded the 2022 season with a 4-3 win over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field.

The Ports (45-87) jumped on Modesto starter Ty Adcock for their three-run frame in the top of the first. With one out Daniel Susac and T.J. Schofield-Sam hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second for Cameron Masterman who roped a double to left center field to drive in two runs and give the Ports a 2-0 lead. After a strikeout, Tommy Stevenson followed with a double to right center scoring Masterman increasing the Stockton lead to 3-0.

After Ports’ starter James Gonzalez posted a scoreless bottom of the first, the Nuts (66-66) got in the board in the bottom of the second. Gabriel Gonzalez began the inning with a triple off the wall in center field and scored when the next batter, Hogan Windish, grounded out to shortstop to make it 3-1.

The Ports increased their lead to three runs again in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on first and third and two outs Dereck Salom reached on an infield single to score Brennan Milone from third base giving Stockton a 4-1 lead.

With Carlos Guarate on in relief of Gonzalez for the Ports, Modesto got a run back in bottom of the fourth. With Gabriel Gonzalez at first base Windish hit a two-out double to right center field to drive home his second run of the game and cut the Stockton lead to 4-2.

The Nuts got an unearned run in in the sixth inning on a two-out throwing error by Salom after an infield single by Gonzalez allowing Cole Young to score from second base bringing the Nuts to within one at 4-3.

Although the Stockton offense failed to score any insurance runs, the Ports bullpen held the Modesto bats down over the final three innings as Jake Pfennigs, Garrett Irvin and Serafino Brito allowed just two base runners from the seventh through ninth innings to end the ballgame.

Guarate (2-2) got the win allowing just one run on two hits over two innings with a strikeout following starter James Gonzalez who pitched well over three innings allowing just one run. Adcock (0-1) started and took the loss for Modesto allowing three runs on four hits in just one inning.

With the win the Ports finish the 2022 campaign at 45-87 and take the season series from Modesto 16-14. Although the 2023 schedule is yet to be announced, season tickets for next season can be renewed now at stocktonports.com or by calling (209) 644-1900.
