Zack Gelof got the Ports (41-66) off to a good start in the top of the first inning. With one out and the bases empty Gelof hit his second home run in as many games, this time a solo shot to left center off Giants' starter Kyle Harrison, to give the Ports a 1-0 lead. It was Gelof's fifth home run in his last ten games.

The Giants (68-42) used the longball to take the lead for good with a five-run third inning. Edison Mora and Najee Gaskins got the inning started with back-to-back singles and Abdiel Layer followed with a three run home run off Ports' starter Angello Infante to put the Giants ahead 3-1. Carter Williams then followed a two-out walk to Ghordy Santos with a two-run shot of his own to give San Jose a 5-1 lead.

With Luis Florentino on the mound for the Ports to begin the fifth, the Giants continued to add on. San Jose loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth after a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. Williams then grounded into a double play to score a run, making it 6-1. The Giants added solo home runs by Grant McCray in the bottom of the sixth and Yorlis Rodriguez in the seventh to increase their advantage to 8-1.
