MODESTO, Ca.- The Modesto Nuts paired a balanced offensive attack with a dominant effort on the mound to defeat the Ports by the final of 5-2, stretching the Ports' losing streak to three.
The Nuts (4-1) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning against Ports starter Kumar Nambiar. A single and two walks loaded the bases with one out, and then three consecutive singles all drove in one run each to give Modesto a 3-0 lead after two.
The Ports (1-4) would scratch across unearned runs in the fourth and seventh innings on RBI groundouts by TJ Schofield-Sam and Sahid Valenzuela to cut the Nuts' lead to 3-2, but Modesto would score twice more in the bottom of the eighth to reclaim their three-run lead.
Stephen Kolek (1-0) got the win with a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Nuts starter Sam Carlson., who struck out seven in four shutout innings. Nambiar (0-1) took the loss for Stockton, giving up three runs in four innings pitched with six strikeouts.
Tyler Sodersrom and Lazaro Armenteros each extended their season-opening hitting streaks to five and four, respectively, and Armenteros stole his league-leading fifth base in the sixth inning.
The Ports will conclude their season-opening six game series with the Nuts on Sunday afternoon in Modesto, sending right-hander Pedro Santos to the mound for a 2:05pm first pitch. All games this season can be heard live on Fox Sports AM 1280 and the iHeart Radio app.
