SAN JOSE, Ca. – Down to their final out in the ninth inning, the Ports rallied to tie the game but the Giants came out on top in extra innings in a 6-5 loss in the series finale on Sunday evening at Excite Ballpark.

The Ports (38-70) took an early lead in the second inning without recording a hit. Cameron Masterman walked against San Jose starter Trevor McDonald to start the inning and reached third on an error by Giants’ second baseman Anyesber Sivira. With one out, Alexander Campos lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Masterman from third base making it 1-0.

With the score still 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Giants (61-47) used the longball to jump in front. With two outs and nobody on, Garrett Frechette grounded a double down the third base line against Ports’ starter Mitch Myers and scored when Sivira hit his third home run in two games, a two run shot to left field to put the Giants on top 2-1.

With one out in the sixth, San Jose added on when Jared Dupere and Victor Bericoto hit back-to-back solo home runs to extend its lead to 4-1. The three home runs hit by the Giants on Sunday brought their total on the week to 14.

After a Junior Perez sacrifice fly in the seventh cut the San Jose lead to 4-2, the Ports tied the game in the top of the ninth. Down to their final out with nobody on base, Perez and Danny Bautista worked back-to-back walks against Giants’ closer Hunter Dula to put runners on first and second for Masterman who roped a double over the head of center fielder Grant McCray to drive in Perez and Bautisa, tying the game at four.

After Hunter Breault posted a scorless bottom of the ninth inning, the Ports took the lead in the top of the tenth inning. Dereck Salom, who started the inning at second base, moved up to third on a fly ball to deep right center by Daniel Susac. Campos then lifted another sacrifice fly to score Salom from third base putting the Ports back on top 5-4.

Sivira hit a dribbler in front of the plate to start the bottom of the 10th that Susac threw errantly to third base in an attempt to retire Frechette, who started the inning at second, allowing the tying run to score and Sivira to reach second base. After an intentional walk of McCray to put runners on first and second, Aeverson Arteaga hit a single down the left field line to score Sivira from second with the winning run, lifting San Jose to a 6-5 victory.

Julio Rodriguez (4-2), who pitched the tenth for the Giants, got the win allowing an unearned run. Ports’ reliever Aaron Cohn (1-4) took the loss surrendering two runs (one earned) on one hit without recording an out.

After a series split in San Jose, the Ports return home to start a six-game series with the Lake Elsinore Storm on Tuesday at Banner Island Ballpark with first pitch at 7:05 pm. Tickets are available at stocktonports.com or by calling (209) 644-1900.
