PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (April 12, 2017) - Dalton Kelly reached base four times and scored three runs but the Palm Beach Cardinals defeated the Charlotte Stone Crabs 8-7 in ten innings Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park.
Kelly is now 9-for-15 with two walks, two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored over his last four contests.
The Stone Crabs (0-7) were able to erase two separate deficits Wednesday. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Kelly grounded a single up the middle to start the inning. Two batters later, Nathan Lukes singled Kelly to second. David Olmedo-Barrera followed by pulling a double to right to score Kelly and tie the game at three. After a strikeout, Peter Maris dropped a single into right to plate a pair and give Charlotte a 5-3 lead.
With the Stone Crabs up 5-4 in the seventh, Palm Beach (5-2) started the inning with back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners, Edmundo Sosa grounded out to score Magneuris Sierra and tie the contest at five. Chris Chinea then singled to center to give Palm Beach a 6-5 advantage.
Sierra finished the game 3-for-5 a walk and three runs scored. Darren Seferina and Danny Diekroeger also picked up three hits each.
Down one in the bottom of the eighth, Kelly reached on a walk before advancing to second on a groundout. After a wild pitch pushed him to third, Sosa committed a throwing error to allow Kelly to tie the game at six.
Still tied in the tenth, Diekroeger singled to begin the inning. After a sacrifice moved him to second, Luke Dykstra connected on a two-run homer to left to give Palm Beach an 8-6 lead.
After a Jake Cronenworth double with one out in the bottom of the tenth, the Stone Crabs scored on a Kevin Padlo sacrifice fly. However, Charlotte would fall a run short.
The 0-7 start is the worst in Stone Crabs history. Charlotte is the first team in Minor League baseball to begin the season 0-7.
