LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - It was officially announced this afternoon that Corey Kluber had earned his second American League Cy Young Award after pacing his 102-win Cleveland Indians to a division title and ALCS appearance.
The 31-year-old right-hander earned 28 of 30 first place votes to top Boston Red Sox lefty Chris Sale for the top pitching honor after going 18-4 with a 2.25 earned run average in 29 starts. His 18 wins and 2.25 ERA were both tops in the American League, while his 8.0 WAR (wins above replacement) was tops among all Major League pitchers.
The former Storm hurler earned 18 wins for the second consecutive season and third time in four seasons. It is the fourth consecutive season in which he's thrown for over 200 innings, with 203.2, and tallied over 200 strikeouts, with 265. It was the first time in his professional career in which he held opposing hitters below .200 batting, at a .193 clip.
Cleveland's ace had a rough start to his 2017 season, posting a 5.06 ERA before landing on the disabled list and missing almost all of May. When he returned, however, he regained his dominant form, going 15-2 from June 1 on with four complete games and a pair of complete game shutouts. He tallied 15 double-digit strikeout performances, including 12 in a 15-game span.
Kluber appeared in 19 games with the Lake Elsinore Storm in 2008, starting 16, before being sent back down to Fort Wayne. The righty returned to The Diamond to start the 2009 season, starting 19 games for the eyes before moving up to San Antonio.
The right-hander is the second Storm pitcher to win the award. Righty Jake Peavy won the National League Cy young in 2007 as a member of the San Diego Padres. Kluber is now the 19th pitcher in baseball history to win multiple Cy Young Awards since the award's inception in 1956.
With Kluber's 2017 honor, a former California League pitcher has won the American League Cy Young four of the last five seasons.
Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer won his third Cy Young Award after taking the National League honor, giving the California League a 2017 Cy Young sweep.
