LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Former Storm infielders Josh Naylor and Luis Urías headlined the San Diego Padres farm system on Saturday, helping fellow Braves, Red Sox, Mariners and Blue Jays to a Peoria Javelinas AFL title with an 8-2 win over the Mesa Solar Sox.
After Mesa got on the board quickly, with a pair of runs in the top of the first, Javelinas pitchers kept the Solar Sox off the score sheet the next eight innings while the offense answered with eight runs to win comfortably.
Naylor hit in the six spot for Peoria while serving as the designated hitter. He went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, while Urias saw time at shortstop and second base hitting in the eight spot. Urias was 0-for-1 with a sacrifice fly while also drawing a base on balls. He was part of three double plays on defense.
Javier Guerra got in the game late as a defensive substitution at shortstop when Urias moved over to second base, making the middle infield exclusively Padres.
Urias led Padres prospects in hitting, going 17-for-54 for a .315 average with seven extra-base hits, nine RBIs and 11 runs scored. The highly-ranked prospect drew 14 walks while striking out just five times to give him a .443 on-base percentage.
Naylor went 24-for-79 for a .304 average with three home runs and 14 RBIs. The left-handed hitter led Padres prospects in hits, home runs and RBIs.
Guerra was 12-for-46 with a .261 average while Franmil Reyes went 5-for-30 and added a home run.
Starting pitcher Walker Lockett saved his best game of the fall for last, pitching the Javelinas to the AFL Cahmpionship birth after allowing just one run and three baserunners in six strong innings last Wednesday. The righty went 2-1 with a 5.40 earned run average in six AFL starts. He spent most of the 2017 season with Triple-A El Paso.
Southpaw Jerry Keel appeared in eight games for Peoria, starting two. Keel went 1-0 through 14.2 innings of work.
David Bednar, a member of the 2017 Storm, made seven appearance out of the bullpen, going 1-0 with a 1.13 earned run average after allowing just one baserunner in eight innings of work.
After a stellar 2017 campaign in which T.J. Weir saw a quick promotion to Double-A, the right-hander made five appearances out of the bullpen, tossing 5.2 inning to the tune of a 1.59 earned run average while also earning a save.
Eight Padres prospects assisted the Peoria Javelinas to an Arizona Fall League-best 19-12 en route to a championship.
