Storm Outhit Quakes But Get Blanked
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm outhit the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes seven to five on Wednesday morning, but the Eyes fell 3-0 in game two of a three-game set.
Starters Joe Ross (L, 8-5) and Lindsey Caughel (W, 6-3) matched wits for the first three innings, but the Quakes got to Ross for three runs in the fourth. A lead-off home run started the home half of the inning, and a bases loaded, two-RBI double later in the frame put Rancho up 3-0.
Caughel kept the Storm bats quiet, striking out a season-high eight batters in the victory.
Adam Cimber and Genison Reyes worked three innings of scoreless relief, but the offense couldn't gain any traction in a 3-0 defeat.
Gabriel Quintana extended his hitting streak to seven with a two for four effort, and Mallex Smith continued to rack up stolen bases with two swiped bags as part of a two for four day.
The shutout was the first time Lake Elsinore (52-38) has been blanked on the road this year. Rancho Cucamonga (50-40) improves to 18-2 in the second half of the season.
The series finale is set for tomorrow night, as Bryan Rodriguez (3-5, 4.30 ERA) looks to return the Storm to the win column. Fabio Martinez (4-4, 4.89 ERA) will go for the Quakes. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
